A fox was wandering through the forest looking for something to eat. He was digging around in the fallen leaves and sniffing to see if he could find at least a little titbit. His tummy was rumbling so loudly, it felt like he had a whole drum kit in there. He was so focused on finding a snack that he didn’t notice that a tiger was quietly sneaking up on him. He was also looking for food, and he would definitely enjoy a tasty fox. After all, his tummy had been rumbling loudly for a long time, too.
By the time the fox noticed him, it was too late to escape. The tiger had already bared his teeth and let out a loud roar.
But the fox was not intimidated and spoke calmly to the tiger: “Oh, great ruler of this forest, I know that you are bigger and stronger than I am. But do not think that you are the only animal to be feared in the area. People are more afraid of me than you are, so you had better think carefully before eating me, because it could really come back to haunt you.”
The tiger roared once more and was just about to eat the fox, when he suddenly stopped and began to think to himself, “What if the fox is right? If people are afraid of him, shouldn’t I be afraid of him too?” By this time, the tiger was so close to the fox that their noses were almost touching. The tiger growled furiously.
“Very well, then,” he growled angrily, “if people are so afraid of you, prove it to me.”
