Once upon a time, it was said that everyone on the planet spoke the same language. How practical that was! If you were to ride across the vast desert on a camel’s back, you could communicate with all the people you met along the way. People visited one another often and actively traded their wares — every town thrived.

In the city of Babel, the most beautiful city of all, there ruled a king named Nimrod. He was known as a mighty king and a clever builder, but that wasn’t enough to satisfy him — Nimrod longed for greater glory. He wanted to be famous across the globe. So he decided to build a tower. But not just any tower. It was to be the tallest tower in the world.

He declared to his people: “Come, let us work together. We shall build a tower so tall it will reach the clouds! We will do what no man has ever done before!”

The Babylonians were very excited about this. They knew that their city was already glorious, but if it also featured the tallest tower in the world, no other city would ever equal it. This thought thrilled them. Construction could begin immediately!

Building such a huge tower is not an easy task, though. Everything has to be properly planned-out and prepared beforehand. But the confident Babylonians didn’t bat an eyelid. They were so sure they were the best in the world that they were certain they’d achieve it!

They started by drawing plans of what the tower would look like and deciding where it would stand. Then they dug the foundations, built some scaffolding, and started bringing in the bricks, singing merrily in order to make the work go faster.
