Once upon a time, the Jewish people lived in the land of Egypt. But the Egyptians did not treat them very well. They made the Jews work very hard, and once the Egyptian pharaoh even decided to kill all the little Jewish boys.

Right at that time, a little Jewish boy was born in Egypt, and he was named Moses. His mother heard about the pharaoh’s terrible plan, and she was determined not to let anything happen to her son. So she wove a basket out of reeds, placed her baby son inside the basket, and set it floating down the river Nile.

“Perhaps good people will find little Moses and raise him as their own,” she hoped as she sadly watched her son being carried away by the water.

She had no idea that the Egyptian princess, the pharaoh’s daughter, was bathing in the river not far away. The princess saw the basket floating by and rescued the baby boy. Since Moses was still such a small baby, the princess hired a nurse to help look after him. As luck would have it, she chose his real mother to be his nanny.

Moses therefore grew up as a royal son. But thanks to the upbringing he received from his real mother, his heart was still with the Jewish people.

One day, when he was already grown up, something unfortunate happened. Moses saw one of the pharaoh’s servants treating a Jewish labourer unjustly and beating him brutally. Moses tried to stop him, they got into a fight, and by an unfortunate accident, the pharaoh’s servant died.

Moses was terrified by what he had done. He knew that a cruel punishment awaited him.
