Sophie goes to kindergarten. She has curly hair and her mother often braids it for her. Every day, Sophie takes great care of her two dolls: Liz and Lucy. But what she is most looking forward to is being able to take care of a real baby, as well as her dolls!

Her mother and father have told her that she'll have a sibling – a little brother.

In the evening, when Sophie went to bed, she eagerly asked her mother: “Mommy, when will the baby be born?”

Her mother looked at her rounded belly with a smile: “I don’t know when exactly, but very soon, darling. Sweet dreams,” she said and kissed her good night. Then she turned off the lights and left the room.

Sophie curled up in her duvet with her two favourite dolls and fell asleep at once.

A strange noise woke her up in the morning. She even thought she heard a siren blaring. Quickly, she jumped out of bed and peered out the window. Indeed, there was an ambulance standing outside and a man in white was holding her mother's shoulder and helping her get inside!

Sophie immediately ran out of the room. She found her father coming out of his bedroom door. He was wearing a jacket and shoes, and when he looked at Sophie, he didn't smile at all.

“I’m going with mommy,” he said quickly. “Don’t worry, I’ll be back soon. Grandma is waiting for you in the kitchen, she’s made you breakfast,” and he vanished out of the front door.

Sophie suddenly got terrified. Why did daddy have to go? Why was mommy getting in the ambulance? Sophie knew that ambulances carry sick and injured people. Tears filled her eyes. She sat down…
