Several cars had gathered near the park on the edge of the town; they had brought a group of builders, who were all wearing orange jackets and helmets. They paced up and down not far from the car park.
From time to time, they would stop to unroll the large pieces of paper they were carrying and look at the plans that were drawn on them – plans for a new housing estate and a new school. Then they took out a roll of red-and-white striped tape and stretched it around the edge of the building site. The work could now begin!
Two diggers and a tall crane were also parked in the car park next to the building site. They couldn’t wait for the work to start! They spent a couple of days eyeing one another shyly before eventually one of them broke the silence.
"I can’t wait to get digging," said the big digger.
"Me neither!" said the little digger, "I love digging things up and shovelling. And my favourite thing," he continued excitedly, "is when it rains and I can mess around in the squishy mud!"
The crane didn’t want to be left out, so he chipped in: "Well, I really like the clean work that comes after that, when I can lift up huge pieces of wall and watch as the buildings grow taller and taller." They chatted and chatted until late in the evening about how much they were looking forward to their work.
Soon enough, both of the diggers got to work. They shovelled all day. The big digger made huge holes in the ground, and the little digger followed behind to make sure it was nice and smooth.
In the evening, they chatted again about the work they had done and bragged…
