Oskar the spider woke up, yawned and started stretching his legs.
He had to be ready, the competition was today! He’d read about it in the paper: “Competition for Best Net” and just knew he had to try. So he’d been practicing hard the past two weeks. He was excited but nervous, just how many spiders would be competing?
He hoped that the biggest spider, the bark spider wouldn't arrive, because then Oskar probably wouldn't have a chance of winning. So he packed his backpack and headed into town first thing in the morning.
When he finally got to the place where the competition was held, he was really surprised. There were many contestants in the competition, but he didn't see even one single spider! A grandmother was holding two long sticks, apparently called needles. She was unwinding wool from a skein of some sort and she was knitting, knitting - and making webs.
In reality, though, she was using wool to knit a shopping net: for oranges, bread, or milk. But Oskar didn't know that.
He was angry: "Spiders make everything themselves! I hope the jury will notice!" He looked around and wondered.
The next contestant was a fisherman. He sat on a chair and he was weaving a fishing net out of silk thread. Again Oskar was frustrated. “Spiders can also fish, you know. Without a net, too!”
The third contestant was sitting in front of a laptop computer. He was tap, tap, tapping away and setting up his internet network. This time, Oskar was furious. “An invisible net? Why, I never! This a net contest, after all!”
So Oskar the spider decided that now he would show everyone what a proper net should look like. He found the best spot in the corner,…
